ICA were appointed to detail, tender and deliver this affordable housing scheme in 2014. Centered around a landlocked courtyard, the project used a series of interventions to allow seven homes to work cohesively within the space.
An external staircase gives access to the upper floors and provides moments of social interaction. Living spaces are configured to provide moments of unique privacy whilst encouraging a proximity of living often eschewed. Lightwells capture light into the deepest parts of the plan disregarding the dense urban location.
The project was highly commended at the Camden Design Awards 2017 with the judges commenting:
'The new external courtyard staircase demonstrates how the positive sense of sociability created has been well thought out. There is a rare humility and generosity in the way that the found qualities of the buildings and courtyard are retained and enhanced. The clever use of borrowed light and volume achieves the project’s goal of making homes that are delightful to live in.'
